A Bevco Bottle Gripper Rinser is an automated packaging machine designed to clean empty containers before they are filled by securely gripping them from the sides using flexible, soft-rubber chains. It lifts and inverts the containers 180 degrees to blast the inside with air, ionized air, water, or chemical sanitizers to remove dust and debris. Beyond cleaning empty bottles, this exact mechanical design is widely adapted on hot-fill juice production lines to function as a vertical cap sterilizer. How It Functions as a Cap Sterilizer In hot-fill juice production, the juice is heated to pasteurization temperatures (typically 185°F to 195°F) and filled directly into the bottle. While the hot liquid sterilizes the inside of the bottle, the cap is applied dry and cold. The cap and the small head-space of air above the liquid remain unsterilized. By placing a Bevco gripper machine immediately after the capper, it repurposes its inversion mechanism to achieve full sterilization: 1. Container Inversion The machine uses its side-gripping chains to hold the sealed, hot-filled juice bottles firmly. Instead of spraying them, it simply carries them through a path that tips them completely upside down or at a steep 90-to-180-degree angle. 2. Thermal Contact Realignment By inverting the bottle, the hot juice rushes into the neck and cap area, completely submerging the inner lining of the cap and the air space.  3. Holding Time (Pasteurization)The machine is built with a specific chain length or configured speed to hold the bottles in this inverted state for a designated dwell time (typically 15 to 30 seconds, though some lines hold up to 120 seconds depending on food safety standards). The residual heat of the product itself destroys any mold, yeast, or bacterial spores on the cap. 4. Upright Discharge Once the holding time concludes, the gripper chain twists back, gently returning the fully sterilized bottles to an upright position and transferring them toward the Bevco Cooling Tunnel. The Bevco gripper rinser operates as a critical “gatekeeper” in a bottling line. It relies on seamless physical, mechanical, and electrical synchronization with surrounding machinery to prevent bottle jams, line crashes, or contamination. Here is exactly how it interacts with the upstream and downstream equipment.1. Physical and Mechanical Interaction; The gripper rinser does not sit on top of standard conveyors; it bridges two independent conveyor sections. Upstream Feed (The Infeed): Empty containers arrive upright on an infeed conveyor. The gripper rinser features adjustable infeed guides and a specialized timing screw or dual intake wheels. These components space the bottles precisely so the moving rubber gripper chains can smoothly pinch the sides of each bottle without crushing them. The Transition (The Elevation Change): Because the gripper lifts bottles up and over an inverted arch, it is frequently used to change line elevation. It can accept bottles at a low height (e.g., from a low-profile depalletizer) and discharge them at an elevated height directly into a filler. Downstream Release (The Discharge): After rinsing or inverting, the gripper chains smoothly open and deposit the bottles vertically onto the discharge conveyor. To prevent bottles from falling over at high speeds, the discharge is perfectly speed-matched to the takeaway conveyor.2. Electrical and Sensor Integration (The Control Loop) The gripper rinser communicates with the rest of the line via a central Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) using photo-eye sensors and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). Anti-Jam Modulation (Downstream Backup): If the filling machine stops or slows down, bottles will back up on the discharge conveyor. A photo-eye sensor positioned just after the gripper rinser will detect this backup. It instantly tells the gripper rinser to pause or slow down so it doesn’t force-feed bottles into a pile-up. Prime Sensing (Upstream Supply): Another sensor monitors the incoming supply of bottles. If the depalletizer stops feeding bottles and the infeed line runs dry, the gripper rinser automatically idles its motor to save power and reduce wear on the rubber chains. Emergency Stop (E-Stop) Interlocking: The gripper rinser is globally interlocked with the filler and capper. If an operator hits the E-Stop on the filler, the gripper rinser stops instantly to prevent empty bottles from accumulating at the filler gates.3. Media and Utility Integration; The machine requires direct tie-ins to factory utility lines to perform its cleaning functions, which directly impacts downstream product quality: Fluid and Air Supplies: It connects to factory compressed air (often through an ionized air generator) or water filtration systems. Filler Protection: If water or sanitizing chemicals are used, the gripper is timed to allow a “drain section” before discharging. This ensures no residual rinse water enters the filling machine, which would otherwise dilute or contaminate the beverage product.
