Every automatic bottle filler on the market belongs to one of two families. Inline fillers run bottles straight through in indexed groups; rotary fillers carry them around a spinning carousel, filling continuously. The two architectures overlap in the middle of the speed range, which is exactly where most growing producers find themselves standing — asking which one their next filler should be.
The answer isn’t “rotary is better because it’s faster.” Each architecture wins on different terms, and the right choice depends on your volumes, your bottle variety, your floor space, and where your production is headed. This guide puts inline and rotary bottle fillers side by side — and covers what to inspect when buying either one used, which is where both architectures deliver their best value.
Inline fillers are linear machines. Bottles travel a straight conveyor into the filler, where gates index a group — commonly 4 to 12 bottles — under a matching bank of fill heads. The heads fill the group, the gates release it downstream, and the next group indexes in. Fill-cap-label lines built around inline machines are the standard configuration for small and mid-size producers.
Rotary fillers never stop the bottles. An infeed star wheel loads each bottle onto a rotating carousel, where it picks up its own fill valve and fills while traveling the circle — 18, 30, 40 or more valves working simultaneously — before a discharge star hands it off downstream. Because filling happens in continuous motion rather than start-stop groups, rotary machines reach speeds inline geometry physically can’t.
Speed is the reason rotary fillers exist. An inline filler’s output is capped by its indexing cycle — group in, fill, group out — which serves producers comfortably through low-to-moderate line speeds. A rotary filler’s output scales with valve count and carousel speed, which is why high-volume water, juice, dairy, and beverage plants run rotary almost exclusively.
The honest sizing question is sustained bottles per minute across a full shift. If your target sits within inline range with headroom to spare, inline is almost always the simpler, more economical machine. If your growth plan blows past it, you’re a rotary buyer — the only question is when.
Inline fillers win small plants. They’re compact, they sit in a straight line, and they slot into existing conveyor runs without re-engineering the room. Rotary fillers need a larger, roughly square footprint plus the infeed and discharge conveying to feed a continuous-motion machine — and they reward a layout planned around them. If your building is the constraint, that alone can settle the decision.
This is where inline machines quietly win multi-SKU operations. Changing bottle sizes on an inline filler is largely a matter of rail and head adjustments, and modern machines make those changes fast. A rotary filler handles a bottle change with change parts — star wheels and guides machined for each container — which makes changeover slower and each new bottle format a tooling purchase.
The rule of thumb: many SKUs and frequent changeovers favor inline; long runs of few formats favor rotary. A contract packager running fifteen bottle styles and a water bottler running two are correctly buying different architectures at the same speed.
Piston, gravity, overflow, pump, and net weight filling all exist in both architectures, so choosing inline or rotary doesn’t lock your fill technology — your product’s viscosity and behavior does. Inline fillers are natural standalone purchases — buy the filler, set it between your conveyors, and pair it with the capper and labeler you have. Rotary fillers increasingly arrive as combination machines: monoblock and triblock systems that rinse, fill, and cap on connected carousels sharing one drive and one frame. Producers usually know it’s time to move from inline to rotary when the signs stack up: the filler runs flat-out through every shift with no headroom, overtime and second shifts exist mainly to cover fill capacity, and the sales forecast says the gap widens from here. The used market changes the timing math meaningfully — when a rotary system or triblock costs a fraction of new, the jump becomes affordable a year or two earlier, and your outgoing inline filler holds resale value in the same market you’re buying from.
Used inline fillers are straightforward to evaluate. Focus on the fill heads or pistons and their seals, the indexing gates and pneumatics, the fill-volume adjustment through its full range, and the controls — a working PLC with documentation makes drop-in integration far easier. Confirm the machine covers your smallest and largest bottles, and see it cycle under power.
Used rotary fillers deserve a deeper look, because more of the machine is in motion. Evaluate valve condition across every position, not a sample — one bad valve among thirty means short fills on every rotation. Check the main bearing and drive for smoothness and noise, inspect star wheels and confirm change parts exist (or can be made) for your containers, and assess the controls package. On monoblocks and triblocks, run all connected functions together. This is the purchase where buying from a supplier who has the machine powered and demonstrable on their floor matters most.
Plenty of plants run both architectures on purpose: a rotary line for the two or three high-volume flagship SKUs, and an inline filler handling short runs, seasonal products, and new-product trials. The used market makes that a realistic structure for mid-size producers — flexibility that would be hard to justify at new prices becomes ordinary at used ones.
Inline and rotary bottle fillers aren’t rivals so much as tools for different jobs: inline for compact footprints, bottle variety, and low-to-moderate speeds; rotary for continuous high-volume production of consistent formats. Size against your sustained speed with headroom, weigh your changeover reality honestly, and let the used market lower the stakes of the decision in either direction.
