Fillers, cappers, and labelers get most of the attention on a packaging line. But none of them run without the equipment behind them. Compressed air drives cappers, valves, and pneumatic cylinders. Electrical panels and transformers power every motor on the line. Meters track product and water. Platforms and stairs give operators safe access to tanks and machines.
This is the world of plant maintenance and support equipment. It rarely shows up in a line layout drawing, but it decides whether a new filler can be installed, whether a line expansion has enough air and power, and whether a plant can keep running when an aging utility fails.
Used Packaging Equipment has supplied used bottling, packaging, and plant support equipment since 1988. Because utilities come out of nearly every plant that closes or upgrades, used inventory in this category is deep and varied. This guide answers the most common questions buyers ask about used plant maintenance and support equipment.
Plant maintenance and support equipment is the utility, electrical, material handling, and facility equipment that keeps a production plant operating. It does not package product itself. Instead, it supplies the air, power, water, access, and measurement that production machines depend on.
Common categories include:
Most packaging lines use compressed air for capping heads, pneumatic cylinders, air knives, case erectors, valves, and air conveyors. When a plant adds machines, it often needs more compressed air capacity to support them.
Fillers, conveyors, labelers, and case packers all need a reliable electrical supply. Motor control centers, panels, and transformers distribute that power safely and allow motors to be controlled from one place.
Meters measure product, water, and other liquids moving through the plant. They support batching, cleaning cycles, and accurate production records.
Tanks, mixers, and elevated machines need platforms and stairs so operators and maintenance staff can reach them safely.
Rotary screw compressors are common in production plants because they are built to run for long periods and supply steady air for the whole facility. Many include soundproof enclosures that reduce noise on the plant floor.
Reciprocating or piston compressors are often used in smaller operations, maintenance shops, or as backup air supply.
An air receiver tank stores compressed air between the compressor and the plant. It helps steady air pressure when demand rises, such as when several machines cycle at once, and reduces how often the compressor needs to start and stop. Vertical receivers save floor space, while horizontal receivers are often mounted with or near the compressor.
Ask for the manufacturer, model, and serial number, along with run hours if they are available. Confirm the voltage and phase, the cooling method, and whether the compressor has been tested under power. Air dryers and filters are often needed alongside the compressor, so ask whether they are part of the setup. Verify air delivery and pressure ratings against the specific machine’s specifications and your plant’s air demand.
A motor control center, or MCC, groups motor starters, drives, and controls into one cabinet. On a packaging line, an MCC may house the variable frequency drives that control conveyor and machine speeds. Used MCCs can supply a line expansion or support a relocated line.
Panels and enclosures house controls, breakers, and wiring for machines and utilities. Buyers should note the enclosure size, its rating for the plant environment, and whether it is suited to washdown areas.
Transformers step voltage up or down so equipment can run on the power available in the plant. They are often needed when used equipment arrives built for a different voltage than the facility supplies.
Confirm voltage, phase, amperage ratings, and whether the equipment carries a UL listing or other certification your plant requires. Have a licensed electrician review any used electrical equipment before installation, and make sure it meets local electrical codes.
Mechanical and electronic liquid meters measure the volume of product, fuel, or other liquids transferred through the plant. They are common at tank loading and unloading stations and on batching systems.
Water meters track incoming water, process water, and water used for cleaning. They help plants monitor use and support water treatment and wastewater reporting.
Match the meter to the liquid it will measure, the pipe size, and the material requirements of your product. Food and beverage applications may require sanitary materials and connections. Plan to calibrate any used meter before relying on it for production records.
Stainless steel platforms, stairwells, and catwalks give operators access to elevated tanks, mixers, and machines. Stainless is preferred in food and beverage plants because it can be washed down and resists corrosion.
Rolling stainless carts move parts, tools, change parts, and ingredients around the plant. They are useful during changeovers and in maintenance areas.
Chillers and cooling towers supply cooling water for process equipment, while boilers supply steam and hot water for cleaning, pasteurizing, and processing. These are major utility purchases, and used units can support a plant expansion or replace an aging system.
Water treatment equipment conditions incoming water for production, boilers, and cleaning. It is important in beverage plants, where water quality directly affects the product.
Adding a filler, capper, or case packer may require more air, power, or cooling. Used support equipment can add that capacity at a fraction of new cost.
Moving a line or opening a new plant often means building out utilities from scratch. Used compressors, panels, and platforms can help a new facility come online sooner.
When a compressor, panel, or chiller nears the end of its service life, a used replacement can keep the plant running without a long wait for new equipment.
