Bottle and Can Conveyor Guide for Bottling Lines

Ask a plant manager what their bottling line is, and they’ll name the filler, the capper, the labeler. Almost nobody names the conveyors — yet conveying is what turns those individual machines into a line. Every bottle and can on your floor spends far more time on a conveyor than inside any machine, and when a line underperforms, the cause is more often in the conveying between machines than in the machines themselves: containers falling at transfers, back pressure crushing lightweight PET, starved fillers waiting on product that’s stuck two turns upstream.

This guide covers how bottling conveyors actually work, the conveyor types that move bottles and cans, and what to look for when you’re specifying, buying, or upgrading conveying for your line.

Why Conveying Makes or Breaks Line Efficiency

A bottling line only runs as fast as its slowest constraint — and on most lines, that constraint isn’t a machine’s rated speed. It’s how smoothly containers flow between machines. Conveying does three jobs at once:

Transport. Moving containers from one machine to the next, upright and in order.

Buffering. Absorbing the short stops and speed differences between machines so a thirty-second labeler jam doesn’t stop the filler. This is where conveyors work hand-in-hand with accumulation tables.

Pressure control. Managing how hard containers push against each other. Too little pressure and machines starve; too much and you get downed bottles, scuffed labels, crushed cans, and jams at every transfer point.

Get these three right and a line built from ordinary machines runs at high efficiency. Get them wrong and even premium equipment spends its day starting and stopping.

Conveyor Types for Bottles and Cans

Table-Top (Slat Chain) Conveyors

The workhorse of bottling. A continuous chain of flat plastic or stainless steel plates rides in a frame, carrying containers upright in single file or mass flow. Table-top conveyors handle glass bottles, PET, and filled cans, run straight or through curves with side-flexing chain, and are built in stainless frames for washdown environments. Nearly every filling line is built on some length of slat chain.

Mat-Top Conveyors

Wider modular plastic belting that carries containers in mass rather than single file. Mat-top sections are the standard choice for combining and dividing lanes, feeding accumulation, and moving unstable empty containers where a wide, stable surface beats a narrow chain. They’re also common ahead of shrink wrappers and case packers where product needs to be collated into groups.

Air Conveyors

Empty PET bottles and empty cans are light enough to move on air rather than a chain. Air conveyors grip PET bottles under the neck ring and float them along on filtered air, moving empties at very high speed overhead without base contact — which is why they’re standard between blow molders or depalletizers and fillers on high-speed PET and can lines. They only work with empty, lightweight containers, but for that job nothing matches their speed and cleanliness.

Elevating and Lowering Conveyors

Bottling lines rarely stay on one level. Gripper elevators clamp containers between opposing belts to carry them vertically, and alpine or spiral conveyors climb elevation gradually while adding buffer length. These matter most when floor space is tight or when the line has to cross a walkway or feed a mezzanine-level machine.

Chains, Materials, and Washdown

Chain and belt selection is where conveying decisions get vertical-specific. Stainless steel slat chain shrugs off glass impact and heat but is loud and needs lubrication; acetal and other engineered plastic chains run quieter, wear gently on containers, and support dry-running or low-lubrication operation, which most food and beverage plants now prefer over soap-and-water drip lube. Wear strips under the chain take the friction so the frame doesn’t, and they’re a consumable — inspect and replace them before worn strips start chewing chain.

For food, beverage, and dairy applications, look for open frame designs, stainless construction, and accessible catch pans that stand up to daily washdown. A conveyor you can’t clean quickly is a conveyor that won’t get cleaned well.

Handling Bottles vs. Cans: The Details That Matter

Guide rails. Rails keep containers tracking through curves and transfers, and they need to be set for the container — snug enough to prevent weaving, loose enough not to pinch. Lines that change bottle sizes should prioritize tool-less, adjustable rail systems; rail changeover time is a hidden cost on every multi-SKU line.

Transfers and dead plates. Every gap between conveyors is a chance for a container to fall, and downed containers cause a disproportionate share of line stops. Well-designed transfers use side transfers, powered transfer rollers, or minimal dead plates matched to the smallest container base on the line.

Empty vs. full handling. Empty cans and PET are featherweight and tip easily — they want wide mat-top, air conveying, or gentle mass flow. Filled glass is heavy and stable but unforgiving at speed: glass-to-glass contact scuffs and breaks. Pressure control matters most where filled glass accumulates.

Single-filing. Fillers, cappers, and labelers take containers one at a time, so mass flow has to be narrowed back to single file. This is done with converging rails and speed differentials — and it’s a common jam point when rail geometry doesn’t match the container. If your line handles unstable or randomly supplied empties, a bottle unscrambler upstream does the orienting before conveying takes over.

Controls: Where Modern Conveying Earns Its Keep

Older lines run conveyors at fixed speeds and let containers bang together. Modern conveying uses variable frequency drives on each section with cascading speed control: each conveyor runs slightly faster or slower than its neighbors to keep containers moving with minimal back pressure. Photo eyes and sensors watch for backups and starve conditions, slowing or pausing sections automatically and signaling upstream machines before a small backup becomes a jam.

If you’re evaluating a used line or an older conveyor system, the mechanicals often have decades of life left — frames and chain are durable — but budget for updated drives, sensors, and controls. That’s usually where the efficiency gain hides.

Buying Considerations

Map the layout first. Conveying is bought by the layout, not by the foot. Machine positions, elevation changes, walkway crossings, and accumulation locations determine what you need. A good supplier will want your floor plan and container specs before quoting.

Match speed with headroom. Conveying between machines should comfortably exceed the rated speed of the machines it connects, so the conveyors are never the constraint.

Plan for your fastest changeover. Multi-SKU lines live and die on rail adjustment and transfer flexibility. Ask how long a container change takes and whether it needs tools.

New vs. used. Conveyor frames, chain, and drives are mechanically simple and long-lived, which makes used bottling conveyors one of the better values in packaging equipment — provided the sections fit your layout or can be reconfigured, and the controls are current enough to integrate with your line.

Keeping It Running

Conveyor maintenance is mostly about watching consumables before they cause damage: chain tension and wear, wear strips, transfer plates, and rail condition. Keep chains clean and properly lubricated (or verified dry-running), listen for the change in sound that signals a failing bearing or dry chain, and walk the line watching transfers — the first sign of trouble is almost always a container hesitating at the same spot every lap.

The Bottom Line

Fillers and cappers get the attention, but conveying determines whether your bottling line runs at 60 percent efficiency or 90. Specify conveyors around your containers, your layout, and controlled line pressure — and treat transfers and accumulation as seriously as any machine purchase.
