Packing Line Equipment: From Filled Container to Loaded Pallet

There’s a natural dividing line in every bottling operation. Upstream, the job is turning bulk product into a filled, closed, labeled container. Downstream, the job changes entirely — now it’s turning thousands of individual containers into a stable, coded, shippable pallet load.

That second half is the packing line, and it’s where a surprising amount of plant capacity is won or lost. Plants tend to invest carefully in the filler and then let the packing end grow by accretion, adding a machine here and a conveyor there as products and customer requirements change. The result is often a back half that can’t keep up with the front half, or one that runs fine until a single stoppage cascades backward and shuts down the filler.

We’ve been supplying used packing line equipment since 1988 across beverage, food, dairy, brewing, distilled spirits, wine, pharmaceutical, nutritional, household, and chemical operations. Here’s how the stages fit together and what to think about when you’re adding to or rebuilding a packing line.

The Stages of a Packing Line

Accumulation and Buffering

The first thing a packing line needs is somewhere for product to wait. Accumulation tables, mass flow conveyor sections, and rotary tables absorb the difference between a filler running continuously and downstream machines that stop periodically for film changes, blank reloads, or faults.

This is the least glamorous equipment on the line and the most consequential. Without adequate buffering, every brief downstream stop becomes a filler stop, and filler stops on a sanitary line carry costs well beyond the lost minutes.

Collating and Grouping

Before product can be packed, it has to be arranged into the pack pattern. Lane dividers, timing screws, servo flight bars, and pin-stop arrangements organize a single or mass flow of containers into rows and complete groups.

Changeover time on a packing line lives disproportionately in this zone, so if you run multiple pack patterns, look hard at how the collating section adjusts and whether tool-free change parts are included.

Packing

This is where the format decision drives the equipment. Cases, trays, shrink bundles, cartons, and combinations of those each call for a different machine architecture. Some plants run several formats for different customers, which makes machine flexibility and change part availability a primary selection criterion rather than a nice-to-have.

Sealing and Closing

Tape, hot melt glue, or heat depending on format. Glue produces a tamper-evident, retail-clean seal; tape is simpler to maintain; heat shrink does the job without either. The sealing method is usually dictated by the format and by what your customers accept.

Coding and Marking

Date codes, lot codes, and barcodes go on containers, cases, and often pallets. Inkjet, laser, thermal transfer, and print-and-apply labeling all appear on packing lines.

This equipment gets specified last and causes trouble first, because coding requirements come from customers and regulators rather than from the plant. Confirm what your codes need to say and where they need to appear before you finalize the line layout, since retrofitting a coder into a tight conveyor run is harder than planning for it.

Inspection and Verification

Checkweighers, metal detection, vision systems, and fill level inspection catch problems before they reach a pallet. Where these sit on the line depends on what you’re checking — container-level inspection belongs upstream of packing, case-level checks belong after.

Palletizing and Load Securing

Conventional layer palletizers, robotic palletizers, and manual pallet stations all end the same way: a stretch wrapper or strapper securing the load for shipment. Pallet pattern, load height, and stability requirements come from your distribution channel, and they should be settled before you select a palletizer rather than after.

Rate Matching Is the Whole Game

The single most common problem we see on packing lines is mismatched rates between stages.

A packing line is a chain, and its throughput is set by its slowest element — but not in a simple way, because machines that stop and start behave differently than machines that run steadily. A case packer rated above your filler’s output can still bottleneck the line if it stops frequently for blank reloads and there’s no buffer to absorb those stops.

The practical approach is to look at each stage’s rated output and its realistic uptime, then place accumulation between stages proportional to how often each one stops and how long it takes to recover. Machines that stop often but recover fast need modest buffering. Machines that stop rarely but take twenty minutes to clear need much more, or a different mitigation entirely.

Rather than working from published rate figures, we’d rather look at your actual numbers — your filler’s output, your current stoppage pattern, and what you’re trying to add. Any rate specification on a specific used machine should be verified against your container and format before you build a line plan around it.

Layout and Footprint

Packing equipment takes floor space in ways that aren’t always obvious from a machine’s dimensions. Blank magazines need reload access. Film unwinds need clearance for roll changes. Palletizers need pallet infeed and full-pallet discharge paths that don’t cross operator traffic. Accumulation needs the room to actually accumulate.

Conveyor elevation changes, direction changes, and the transitions between machines are where layouts get tight. If you’re planning a packing line into an existing space, mapping the conveyor path and the operator access paths matters as much as fitting the machines themselves.

Automation Levels

Manual and semi-automatic packing — operators hand-pack from a collection table, with machines handling sealing and palletizing. Common in craft breweries, wineries, distilleries, and smaller food operations, and entirely appropriate at those volumes.

Automatic inline packing — product flows continuously from accumulation through packing, sealing, coding, and palletizing with operators handling material replenishment and exception clearing. This is where most growing operations land.

Used equipment makes stepping between these levels far more approachable, because you can automate one stage at a time as volume justifies it rather than committing to a full line replacement.

Buying Used for an Existing Line

When you’re adding a machine to a line that already exists, four specs govern whether it’s a drop-in or a project: conveyor height, discharge direction, footprint, and electrical supply. Get those confirmed before anything else.

Then work through control compatibility, whether the machine can signal and respond to the equipment around it, and what change parts come with it. And be realistic about installation — even a well-matched used machine needs conveyor tie-ins, controls integration, and commissioning time.
