Most accumulation on a packaging line happens in a straight line — product backs up along a conveyor, spreads across a mass flow section, and releases when the downstream machine catches up. Rotary accumulation turn tables work differently. They gather product on a slowly rotating disc, holding a floating pool of containers in a circular footprint rather than a linear one.
That difference in geometry is why they end up in a specific place on most lines: the two ends. A rotary table at the head of the line feeds containers into the filler; a rotary table at the discharge end collects finished product for an operator to pack, or buffers it ahead of a case packer. In both cases, the value is the same — a large amount of accumulation in a compact, roughly square area, without adding a long run of conveyor a plant may not have room for.
We’ve supplied used rotary accumulation tables to beverage, food, dairy, brewing, distilled spirits, wine, pharmaceutical, nutritional, household, and chemical operations since 1988. Here’s how they differ, and what to look at before you buy one.
A motor drives a horizontal disc at low speed. Containers set on the disc ride with it, drifting outward and around until a fixed guide rail — sometimes called a sweep or a scroll — intercepts them and directs them toward the discharge conveyor. Product that doesn’t get picked off simply continues around for another pass. The rotation keeps the pool live, so containers don’t lock together into a static mass the way they can on a stopped conveyor.
That gentle continuous motion is the reason these tables handle glass well. Containers slide against each other rather than getting pushed hard into a backup, which reduces scuffing on decorated bottles and lowers the risk of breakage compared to a hard-stopped line pressure situation.
The same basic machine gets used in two different duties, and the setup differs.
As a feed table, the disc holds a supply of empty containers dumped or loaded by an operator and meters them onto the infeed conveyor toward the rinser, filler, or unscrambler. Worth being clear here: a rotary accumulation table is not an unscrambler. It does not orient containers or right them from bulk — it holds and releases containers that are already upright. If you need bulk unscrambling, that’s a different machine, and the table often sits beside it rather than replacing it.
As a collection table, the disc receives filled, capped, and labeled product from the discharge conveyor and holds it in a rotating pool while operators hand-pack cases, or while a downstream packer works through a backlog. This is the more common configuration in craft breweries, wineries, distilleries, and smaller food operations where the final packing step is manual.
Stainless steel discs are standard in food, beverage, dairy, and pharmaceutical environments where washdown is routine. Look at the disc surface for scoring and at the perimeter for dishing or warp.
UHMW and plastic top discs offer a lower-friction surface that’s gentler on some container finishes and quieter in operation. Check for gouging and for wear at the outer edge where containers spend most of their time.
Coated and painted carbon steel shows up on older machines and in non-sanitary applications. Fine for many household and chemical plants, but a poor fit anywhere that gets hosed down regularly.
Under the disc, the drive arrangement is usually a gearmotor with a chain, belt, or direct drive to a center bearing. That center bearing is the component most worth inspecting — a worn one produces wobble, and wobble on a loaded table gets worse quickly.
Disc diameter determines how many containers the table holds, and how much floor space it takes. The right size depends on three things: your container footprint, your line rate, and how long you need the buffer to last.
The practical question is what a stoppage costs you. If the downstream machine goes down for a couple of minutes on a routine basis, you need enough accumulation to absorb that without stopping the filler. If your typical interruption is longer than the table can cover, a larger disc or additional accumulation elsewhere is the answer.
We’d rather size this against your actual numbers than publish general capacity figures, since the container diameter and the pack density on the disc change the math substantially. Any capacity figure quoted on a specific used machine should be verified against your container before you commit.
Disc rotation speed is usually adjustable, either by a mechanical drive or a VFD. Variable frequency drive control is worth paying attention to on a used machine, because it lets you tune the rotation to your container and product weight rather than living with a fixed speed.
Guide rails and sweep arms are the other adjustment point. Their position determines where product exits and how aggressively it’s directed. Confirm that the rails on a used table are complete, adjustable, and appropriate for your container height and diameter — replacements are usually straightforward to fabricate, but it’s better to know up front.
Some tables include a level sensor or photo eye that stops the disc when product backs up to a set point, or that signals upstream equipment. Ask whether that control exists and whether it’s still wired and functional.
Start under the disc. Check the center bearing for play, the gearmotor for leaks and noise, and the drive chain or belt for wear and tension. Spin the disc by hand if you can and watch for wobble or high spots.
On top, look at disc surface condition, the seam and mounting hardware if it’s a segmented disc, and the guide rail brackets for missing or damaged parts. Verify the frame and legs are square and that leveling feet are intact — an out-of-level table produces uneven product flow and puts extra load on one side of the bearing.
Confirm the electrical package: motor condition, drive or starter, controls, and whether the enclosure rating suits your washdown environment. And check the discharge height against your existing conveyor, since matching heights is the difference between a drop-in installation and a fabrication project.
Rotary tables are among the easier pieces of used equipment to integrate, because they usually connect at a single point and don’t need to be timed with anything. The specs that matter are disc height relative to your conveyor, disc diameter versus available floor space, discharge or infeed side, and electrical supply. Consider clearance around the table too — operators need to reach across a collection table, and disc diameter can outgrow the aisle before it outgrows the room.
